It's official.. Detroit pizza is better in New York than it is in Detroit. There, I said it! And I won't take it back.
I'm obsessed, best new pizza I've had in NYC! First time trying Detroit style pizza and I really enjoyed it. Got the MVP pizza with vodka, red sauce, and pesto. I had never had that combo before and honestly thought it sounded a bit weird, but I loved it, was seriously so good! I also had reservations before eating here because when looking at photos the pizza seems a little burnt and I'm always ordering pizzas lightly baked and prefer doughier crusts. Not sure why it looks burnt, but it's not at all and the crust is a little doughier through the whole pizza even the more crispy looking edges. I really liked the sesame seed crust I thought it added a lot of flavor. To note, they don't sell individual slices. No problem, we were just on our own pizza tour and thought they had slices. We got the smallest sized pizza and it worked out. Went on a Saturday around 4pm and was pretty empty. The server was great. Bathrooms a bit tight and both bathroom hand driers were not working, no paper towels either. I can't wait to go back and try all of the other pizza flavors, so many good sounding ones! Had leftovers of the MVP, tasted great reheating later.
This place offers delicious food and drinks in a casual environment. If you're looking for a place to enjoy quality pizza and salads but not so casual that it's a pizzeria, this is a great choice. The area is littered with endless food and drink options but this one should stand out for a dinner with friends or a casual date night. The reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the overall atmosphere can get really loud and the place can feel super busy, which is not conducive to a cozy, intimate dinner. There were several large groups seated near us, and loud music playing from the speakers, making conversation difficult at times. It's hard to know if it was a combination of the two or just the loud groups that made the noise level so unenjoyable. It's totally possible that on another night, the vibe could be very different. We also paid for grilled chicken to be added to our salad and it only came with 5 small chunks. They were delicious, but at basically a dollar per bite, that doesn't seem very worth it. Overall, these small things do not prevent this place from being a great place to go and grab a bite. I would absolutely come back as the food was absolutely delicious and the location is near a ton of great bars.
I rarely stray away from simple pizzas. I normally just get cheese or pepperoni, as the opportunity cost of trying a new pizza and not liking it is just so damn great. Some of y'all do SO much with your pizza smh. There are few things better than bread, cheese, red sauce, and some pepperoni done well. Simple, yet effective. Oddly similar to my mid range jump shot... All this to say, my girlfriend really wanted the Colony pizza from Emmy Squared, as she is far more adventurous with her pizza. I realize this only adds honey and jalapenos to a pepperoni pizza ahahaaha but still, I was nervous. Plus she was buying so what was I really gonna say lol. Upon opening the box, I was hopeful. It still looked delicious. I mean it literally just adds jalapenos to what I normally get so...... I know I'm nuts, but I can only be me. After ripping into my first bite, I got a mouth full of jalapeno so that threw me off a bit, but I composed myself and kept forging on. I ended up eating 3 slices, and was gonna go for 4 but didn't want to be a little piggy wiggly because I'm tryna be rockstar skinny. I prob shouldn't be eating pizza when I'm tryna be rockstar skinny, but here we are. I did end up eating around the jalapenos if we are being honest, but that honey did add so much to my normal pepperoni pizza. It inspired me to start adding hot honey to my pepperoni pizzas. I know I'm behind the 8 ball on that but whatever. It is what it is. Thank you, Emmy Squared, for taking me on this journey. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov_reviews
My family and I stopped into Emmy Squared on a Wednesday around 8pm. We had no reservation, but were seated right away. We all ordered beers (they have many on tap or in cans), but they have plenty of cocktail options if you'd prefer. For food, we Brussels Sprouts Salad, Margherita pizza, and Good Paulie Pizza. The food was excellent. What I love about their pizza is it's filling and hearty, but tastes fresh and light. It's not greasy at all! We loved the combo of flavors on the Good Paulie in particular. Ambiance is good. It's non-pretentious and boisterous. Though they had great tunes pumping, we still were able to enjoy conversation. Service too was great. Our servers were friendly and attentive. They even comped one of the beers because they thought it took too long to come out. Overall, I highly recommend Emmy Squared for a low-key evening and some delicious pizza. I'll definitely be back.
